A growing number of scientists are concerned that we are creating a digital generation, growing up online but unable to think, concentrate and learn in the way that their forebears did.
Kenan Malik examines the latest research to ask whether they are right to worry – or whether we should we asking wider questions about how we all use new technology.
He hears from leading neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf of Tufts University.
“My worry is that the child who will be so immersed in digital media will really have the benefit of only part of that entire reading circuit,” she says, “rather than a deeper probative function of that information, the going beyond the information given.”
An opposite point of view comes from the Canadian web guru Don Tapscott, who believes we are creating the brightest generation in history.
“Time online is not taking away from hanging out with your friends, learning the piano, talking to your parents or doing your homework,” he says. “It’s taken away from television.”
And, he argues, that means the digital generation are more curious, sophisticated and intelligent than their parents.
e’s backed up by the writer and self-confessed “dweeb” Stephen Fry who believes that there is no opposition between the web and the book: “They complement each other quite beautifully.”
“It seems to me insane to think that somehow they’re betraying Goethe and the great panoply of Western civilisation simply by engaging fully in the life of the net and the computer.”
Yet Kenan discovers some surprising research from a huge project at University College London. They’ve discovered that both young and old engage in rapid, superficial reading of the web.
The project’s head, Professor David Nicholas, is concerned that the real problem is that younger web users lack the information assessment skills of those trained to use conventional libraries.
“I think a lot of people are being disenfranchised … are not able to benefit from the fruits of an information society because they don’t know how to handle that vast amount of information which they have to make sense of.”

What do you think? Is it internet really able to make us stupid? To some extent, I need to agree. But on the other hands, if we are “creative” enough, I think we can make full use of internet facilities and information to broaden our knowledge as well. It’s all depend our background, as how we “digest” and “how acceptive” of different people’s perception.

I read a newspaper article in which the reporter went to interview a director whom the reporter thinks his movie (referring the director) not that nice. Personally, I think it is immature way of conducting a research or interview in which you have make a judgment.
Ok, back to the main point. If you are to choose a movie, which one will you choose to watch? Money No Enough 2 or IP man…I watched both movies…I introduced Money No Enough 2 to some of my friends and their response were “From today onwards, they need to filter any of my suggestion” They did not think Money No Enough 2 is good enough to catch their attention.
What is your purpose of watching a movie? Do you want to learn or just watch? It’s a different perpective. You can’t judge this movie is not good because we do not like it. We have to look from different angle.
My views:
Money No Enough 2: It was a touching movie. It did taught how to love family member. Be appreciative to one another.
Ip Man: A Hero who only knows fair and justice. A person who takes care of his clan and their own pride.
Most probably I will update on this posting later on…Comments are welcome…

Malaysia Project Superstar 2008 concluded yesterday with KAY (Winner for FEMALE section) grabbed the grand final superstar status. Although this is first time that a female won a Project Superstar (reality show) in Malaysia. I supported HAU (Winner for MALE section) and even SMS twice for him. Haih, a bit sad…
This is a third running that “talent’s group (xi le pai)” lost to “idol’s group (o xian pai)”. First two seasons saw two male who are “o xian pai” grabbed the grand final superstar status. It’s lead me to reflect on this reality show.
- “Idol’s group” seems to be have the upper hand in winning reality show. But how many “idols” survived in the entertainment world? How many of them maintained their status in their pursue as entertainer? Don’t forget “idols”, today “consumers” will vote for you, but the “consumers” will change their “idol” if any new “idols” able to overtake the latter one. Just look at Michael Wong, who is one of the most talented songwriter, composer and singer. Does he have look, OK la…But his talent that prevails at the end of the day. People loves his songs, and finally accept him as well…
- Why Project Superstar 3? I think it’s because Project Superstar 1 and 2 (John and Henley) have lost their popularity. It’s might be demand from “consumers” as well. But from my reflection from business view, in order to keep “Superstar” keep on ringing at people’s ear, they need to comes out with new “Superstar” to keep their business. Remember, when there is demand, there will be supply. How many of us still remember John and Henley, who were past winners? Err, actually I have forgotten John liao lo…
- “Instant” star is born after few months of training. “Instantenous” has create a great mindset into youth today. Youth todays want something there is fast to gain popularity and fame. This reality told them “your dream will become reality if you pursue it”. I agree with this statement, but should they tell them that without hard work and perserverance, all shall be in vain. After this reality show, more hard work shall be done. More challenges are coming up. More and more unexpected things will happen in the entertainment world. When some Christians are looking for “instantenous” spiritual growth, to be honest..I can’t do much if people have this kind of perception. Our God is not “instant”. You want to be mature, learn the process.
- The good thing I like Project Superstar is this year theme song called “I have a dream”. One of the stanza says “I hold on to my dream”. It was a dream that cause Martin Luther King to pursue equality, and freedom for blacks. I asked myself, “Can I hold on to the dreams and visions that God given to me?”. Can I overcome life challenges? God, by Your mercy…Strengthened me, Dream for the Lord.
